This proposed new marriage law, which seeks to lower the legal age to get married in Iraq to just nine years old, has triggered an outcry across social media, where activists, organizations, and concerned citizens are voicing their alarm.

The New Personal Status Law in Iraq, which is going to be passed in parliament,allows marriage at age of 9 yrs old similar to Yemen which allows marriage at even age of 7 and 8 yrs old.

In Iraq Sharia clerics are pushing for amendments to Law No. 188 of the Personal Status Law of 1959 which would lower the age of marriage & presumably the age of consent from the age of 15 to 9 years of age.
